The computer people you can believe in

Microsoft Windows 95/98 or NT Workstation Although the normal software installed on PC's would be Microsoft Windows 95 or 98, (which is preloaded on most PC's) there is one other option you can realistically have: - Microsoft Windows NT Workstation. With an almost identical look and feel, NT Workstation provides additional security for areas where tampering or security is an issue. One issue you may have to overcome is a financial one (each NT Workstation licence does cost more than a standard Windows 95/98 licence). If you have areas (or users) that cause problems to their PC's, you may wish to decide to have NT Workstation look after things for you. When faced with the daunting task of selecting a new PC for your organisation, the facts and figures can be very daunting indeed. It is always difficult to decide what brand or type of PC should be ordered. Also a standard for specification is sometimes used to aid purchasing. One question always asked of us is: - "its only going to be used for simple word processing, does it need to be a fast Pentium PC" Our answer normally goes something like this: - "I can remember being asked that question about the 386!" The fact is, that whatever you decide to buy, it will be very quickly superseded or upgraded (and normally at a cheaper price). You should really be asking yourself how best to protect your investment and how to use the computers as more than 'just a word-processor'. You might try to set a budget per PC, and then buy the fastest and most powerful you can get at that time. It is also worth setting a simple standard. (see Multimedia) If all PC's are of similar a standard, then setting PC's up and maintaining them becomes much easier.
